Kids Book Shelf – Child Proofing Your Home’s Bookshelves

A kids book shelf gives a child some sense of ownership as well as provides an appropriate space for him to place his books and this is a good piece of furniture to put in a child’s room. However, oftentimes, parents tend to reuse old bookshelves for use in their children’s room to save on money which is highly inappropriate since they are not made to be child proof like commercially sold kids book shelves.

Safety is always the main concern when getting something for a child and in the case of a kids wall book shelf, it should be built durably and designed to be safe for a child to use. Many parents often do not realize the accidents that a bookshelf may cause and here are some tips on how to prevent any accidents.

A kids book display shelf should be made sturdily which means that it should not have any loose shelves or boards and the it should not have any rough surfaces or broken wooden pieces that can injure a child.

Some bookshelves are designed to have detachable shelves and oftentimes these shelves rest on four small pegs which should be removed if not in use since a child will almost always play with these small items or even put them in their mouth. Likewise, if a child is older, they might misplace these small items.

A good childrens book shelf should be designed to be bottom heavy which means that it should not topple over even if the top shelf is full. Children are known to enjoy climbing on anything that is accessible like a computer table, chair, twin bunk bed, and so on and bookcases are basically the best and easiest items they can climb on.

Discouraging a child not to climb on bookcases is like trying to tell them not to love sweets and it is that difficult though covering the entire bookshelf with a fitted sheet might do the trick. A good precautionary measure would be to use metal straps to secure the top of the bookcase to the wall so that it definitely won’t topple over unless the wall breaks.

Heavy books are also a hazard in a child’s room and it should be placed on the lowest shelf or placed on the play desk or an upholstered chair. By removing any heavy books, the risks of breaking a head or toe can be minimized. Likewise, heavy bookends should also be removed from use.

Similarly, all bookcases in the house which a child can access should be child proofed. This means that a stack of Vanity Fair magazines should not be displayed on the top shelf and instead, soft items like stuffed animals should be displayed just like on the kids book shelf.
